Juab County

Not the largest county in the state, but home to some great sites. The Drum Mountain range, Spor Mountains, Thomas Range. The list goes on and on. Surprisingly to us, there is a lot of activity in these hills. A lot of people are out with active claims, working the land and the sites that have historic structures and mines, they all appear to have been well taken care of. The most well known area in the county is probably the Eureka area. A huge boom in its day, Eureka is now a town and an area with an uncertain future. The locals in Eureka, on a whole, are very unfriendly and seem to want to keep people from having any knowledge of the Mining history that their town arose from. Still, a nice place to drive through. Maybe someday Eureka will take a lesson from the rest of the county and be a bit more hospitable.

From the official Juab County site:

"Juab County was formed in 1852, including portions of what is now Nevada. The size of the county was reduced in 1854 and 1856 along with various other changes through the years until the curent borders were set. The first real settlement came in 1851 when Mormon pioneers settled Nephi. They relied mainly on agriculture for their livelihoods. In 1869, silver, gold, copper and other precious metals were discovered in the Tintic region. Many mining towns, such as Diamond, Silver City and Eureka popped up during this era. By 1899, it was considered to be one of the richest mining districts in the entire nation. Mining continued into the mid-1900's with the operations scaling down through the rest of the century."
