GRE, Inc. is a not-for-profit Incorporation dedicated to the preservation and documentation of the Western States mining heritage. A concept developed by company founder, Corey Shuman, in the late 1990s. Mr. Shuman had attempted to work with federal organizations to preserve and document Utah's historical mining resources for well over a decade. However, Utah's Bureau of Land Management and Department of Oil Gas and Mining had made it very clear that there was no interest in preserving Utah's Mining Heritage. In fact a statement was made that it was time for the "scar of mining" to be removed from Utah's history. Mr. Shuman invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in documenting these sites, emphasizing public education that these sites were no more dangerous than a day of skiing. For well over 20 years this continued, documentation accumulating that showed the destruction of these sites from year to year with no ideas on how to save them from the public dollars being used to destroy them.
In 1992 Mr. Shuman created Gold Rush Expeditions, a small organization targeted at providing tours to these historical sites for the public. However, interest was small and the interest at the time was in dot-coms and internet business. The company existed on loans and willpower for 12 years. In 2004, Gold Rush Expeditions, in its current form was dissolved. Shuman incorporated GRE, Inc., an acronym for the previous Gold Rush Expeditions, as a not for profit organization, (not to be confused with a 501c3), and began to take a more proactive role against the organizations that were consistantly destroying the valuable history. With assistance from GRE, Inc., cities passed ammendments to let the DOGM know that they did not want their historical treasures destroyed. However, under the guise of public saftey, the DOGM and BLM ignored these requests, continuing to bulldoze and seal mines, knowingly destroying the history that was inside of them and on the ground around them.
In 2008 an idea led to a concept that led to a plan of action. If the mines were claimed and their interest conveyed, then the sites were no longer abandoned and may be saved. Trial and error led the first few months of surveying, staking and claiming, but soon the process was established and historic mining sites were being claimed and re-sold to outside interested parties. This idea caught on like wild fire, the concept was simple, GRE, Inc. does the work and all the paper work and offers it to the highest bidder in a tidy bundle. No longer were mining claims something ambigous and confusing, the average public citizen could now own a mining claim without needing a PhD to understand the process and the paperwork. This idea has continued to grow over the years.
Today, GRE, Inc. employs 6 full time employees and contracts with other small business in Utah to expand our inventory of mines and mining claims to include most all of the western states. We have surveyed over 4,000 sites in the past 20 years and have photos and documentation to back it. In 2011 we connected over 700 people with mine sites of thier own. These people are slowly building and mining these sites. Making a future for themselves and their family from a bit of land that a few years ago the BLM and DOGM deeemed to be a hazard.
Our business is to connect people from all reaches of life with a 20 acre section of land that speaks to them. We target historical sites with established ore values. The more remote, the more untouched, the better. We educate the public on what they can and cant do with their mineral rights. Think of it as taking back a little bit of your "public lands" from the federal government. It gives the opportunity to build your own wealth and stimulate the economy of the nation at the same time, but more than that, its preserving the heritage of mining. Bringing back the days when a guy with a shovel could go out on a Monday, break ground and return on Friday with enough money to make himself and his family comfortable. Its taking prosperity into your own hands.
